Recruit Smart!

The most important thing that I have learned over the past few years is to recruit great leaders, not necessarily great friends. Yes, you may want your friends to become your sisters or brothers, but do they truly fit into your organization? Do they party hard or spend time in the library on the weekends? Are they more interested in acting stupid or would they be willing to get up at 8 AM on a Saturday and do volunteer work? What would happen if their actions were to reflect poorly on your organization?

We need to be sure to recruit members this semester who truly understand our values and who we can help become great leaders for our organization. Friendship can come later, building from shared ritual and respect. Some of my favorite people in my organization are those that I had never met before recruitment, but the second I met them I knew that they would do great things. They have the respect of our organization because they stand by their morals and exhibit great leadership qualities. I consider them great friends and even better people.

Remember that leadership doesn’t necessarily have to come with a position, but that you lead by example.

Time to Self Reflect

I’ve noticed many things about my Greek community within these past couple days. We can recite our values very easily and know the values we live by. I hope this uproar of Greek spirit does not fade by next semester. I feel like we are all excited about our chapters and proud of what we stand for. I urge everyone that these are values and traits that we should live by all day, everyday and for the rest of our lives, and not just when times get rough. I read a recent article about how people in Greek life across the country are keep on being put in the news for their negative actions. The author said that our brothers and sister should really look at what it means to actually live those values and why their organization was started in the first place.

My personal chapter was started because our founder noticed that collegiate women were not making the most out of their college experience and found that many were using college for more of a social aspect than to build more well rounded women. Our founder started my sorority to focus on scholarship, service, leadership and living by a set of values. To find the beauty of your individual self and become the best woman you could become is the reason my sorority was founded. I focus a lot of my time and energy into my Greek community because I know, from my founder, how much of an impact a sorority can have on your life.

I hope this recent issue within our community will make people realize what it takes to live up to your values. It’s comes from a strong passion from within. And it might very well be true that some individual in our community do not have the same things in mind when asked about why they enjoy being in a Greek Chapter and I hope this issue makes them realize a Greek chapter is something that is more than just a club, a set of meetings or mandatory events but a way of life. Don’t waste your money or time if you do not take what you pledge to your chapter seriously.

I am very hopeful that this spirit in our Greek community will not fade quickly. I have seen people come together closer than ever before. This is not a time to be on complete defense of the Greek community but a time for self reflection. It is our individual responsibility to take action to prove what we preach. Are you a role model in your community?

Just a little recap. This weekend was pretty amazing <3 It was my formals weekend for my sorority. I’ve been waiting a whole semester for it to happen and it was wonderful. I’m really proud of myself, my line, and my chapter for all we’ve accomplished this past semester and I’m glad to have AphiG a part of my life.
